"Boom & Bloom: Part I is an album of short pieces that I composed, played, recorded, mixed, and mastered in my studio during the Covid-19 Shelter-In-Place era of spring 2020. The album instrumentation is all in the percussion family (drum kit, percussion, drum machine, children's xylophone). Boom and Bloom also includes excerpts from field recordings I've made over the years and vocal samples from a series of cassettes my grandfather recorded in the last years of his life. In addition to inspiring the writing process, these field recordings and samples motivated me to experiment with the recording approach and sound textures in various ways throughout the album.

Boom & Bloom is dedicated to the fight toward racial equality and to African-Americans still seeking to be recognized as fellow human beings and equals by systems of power in the United States. Global culture, innovation, leadership, thought, and wisdom has been and continues to be profoundly shaped by people from throughout the African Diaspora. So too has my life and creative work. Toward this work for racial equality, 100% of proceeds from Bandcamp sales of Boom & Bloom: Part I on Friday 6/19 will go to the NAACP legal defense fund and to Cultivate Charlottesville, a non-profit organization working for food equity in the Charlottesville community." - MW, June 2020.
